Tips for setting up your own aesthetics practice

adminBlog, Business, Training

There are many benefits to becoming an independent aesthetic practitioner, indeed to any kind of self-employment. They include increased earning potential, more control over your time, improved work/life balance and artistic enjoyment.

However, self-employment is not for everyone, and there are also many pitfalls, ranging from unpredictable income, lack of separation between work and leisure time, and loneliness. You need a wide range of skills to be a successful entrepreneur, so if marketing, IT and budgeting are not your forte, you either need to learn fast or get someone else to help you!

If the idea still appeals, here are 5 great tips for setting up and maintaining a successful independent clinic.

1) Make sure you have the right skills and training

Botox and fillers account for the majority of non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the UK.

In contrast, expensive machines and niche techniques can cost a huge amount financially to provide, with no guarantee that this investment will pay off. For example, a £30,000 laser might be useful in a larger clinic, bus is unlikely to quickly create profit in a smaller environment.

A strong background in botox and fillers is far more valuable for a new practitioner than a superficial familiarity with 18 diverse yet uncommon procedures.

2) Keep them coming back

The relationship you build with your clients is key to success. It’s said to be 6 times easier to get an existing client to return than to attract a new one. Build a great relationship with everyone you treat, and they will keep coming back, and so will their friends.

Recommendations and referrals are the smart way to grow your business. Referrals create loyal patients, and with a strong foundation of trust, the increasing popularity of your aesthetic business will continue over the long term.

3) Get ready

Although you don’t need a business background to set up your own aesthetics practice, you will need some basic infrastructure and experience before you can safely and legally begin. Ensure that you:

  • Register as self employed
  • Get good cosmetic insurance
  • Stock up on equipment and supplies
  • Develop a robust consenting system
  • Plan for problems

Putting time into being organised is the only way to ensure your business can be effective from the start.

4) Prioritise your professional development

Once you have a solid foundation in core techniques, it’s essential that you continue to advance and diversify your skills. Investing in training is one of the best decisions you can make, and is a key factor in common amongst those who are successful in the long term.

Attend training courses, visit exhibitions, join workshops – take every opportunity to develop your professional skills.

5) Listen to your patients

Allow enough time in consultation to really understand what your patients are telling you . Follow up on your patients post-treatment too – it’s an excellent way to learn, improve your aesthetic judgement, and strengthen your relationship with each patient.
